I love everything about Godzilla. Since I was little, I was always fascinated by monsters and dragons, dinosaurs and creatures like Cthulu. But Godzilla was always my favorite. This special project allowed me to deep dive into the history of the King of Monsters and create something that held my interest and that I was passionate about. I am proud of how it turned out!
This film gave me a chance to build on some of the skills I have learned over the past few years in VAM. While VAM has taught me to use a lot of different mediums, I really enjoyed the graphic design side of it the best. I use adobe photoshop and illustrator quite often and am becoming comfortable with it. I liked making my movie poster for this short film as well as the one in VAM 20 for The Hummingbird. Moving forward, I feel a career in graphic design is something I would like to explore but I am not 100% sure yet.
The video editing. This is the highlight of the project but also provided the most challenges. I knew I wanted to use Final Cut Pro as it was just a superior software to iMovie but it was not available at the school, so a lot of my work had to be done on my own time. Deadlines and managing that time was especially challenging for my adhd brain! My perception of time gets a bit warped. How much time I actually have vs how much time I think I have are vastly different. Anyway, back to editing…It was sometimes difficult getting the audio and transitions lined up correctly. Sometimes you had to time it down to a tenth of a second otherwise it would mess up the footage. Or the audio would overlap. Or the video clips would be out of time. Also acquiring some of the footage was hard to get at decent quality as its all copyrighted. But I made it work.
I was really excited to use Motion. Its a software that I used for the titles. It was more difficult than I had thought and I needed some outside help. My dad is a graphic designer by trade and he gave me some lessons along the way and helped me create them. I think I need to play with it a bit more to fully understand how it works but I did enjoy using it.
Research, research research. I thought I knew a lot about Godzilla going into this, but I have achieved expert level knowledge now! It a lot more fun to research something you are interested in. I found the history behind the original Godzilla to be the most interesting which allowed me to hyperfocus (adhd brain) and while I put the most time into that portion, it went together smoothly and its my favorite part of the film. By contrast, There was not a lot going on in the Millennium era, lots of cool concept art but it was the least memorable in my opinion. That part seemed to drag a bit and I had trouble really getting into it.
This project definitely evolved as it went along. What I envisioned in my head is not quite what transpired but I like it just the same. I originally thought it would be a bit more quirky and use more goofy animations and such. But it didn’t feel like a good fit. I mean, it’s about a giant scary monster so making it silly seemed out of place and awkward. But I like how it turned out. My goal was to educate the viewer in an entertaining way that was memorable. I think I achieved that. Now please enjoy my film, Godzilla - King of Monsters.
